Abstract
With the University of Michigan being a predominatly-white institution, insight into undergraduates from underrepresented groups to better understand their experiences of college and how they decide to navigate the college experience is essential towards inclusive initiatives. This project places an importance on juniors and seniors of color and how they connect to the university while observing the racism that exists while attending it. Large public research institutions commit resources to their diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives however, historically marginalized groups of students remain underrepresented on campus. Analyzing 74 interviews collected with U-M undergraduates in Fall 2020 will display the relationship between a well-endowed university and the underrepresented groups that attend it by examining their allegiance and critique of the institution. This project aims to uncover how students interact with classroom and social dynamics alongside formatting the results of this research into establishing manners to better support underrepresented students.
