Abstract

Hi, my name is Madison Daminato, and I use the preferred pronouns she/her/hers. I am entering my second year studying biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan. This summer I worked with the Southwest Detroit Community Justice Center whose goal is to increase public trust in the justice system and assist in the reduction of crime. The SWDCJC provides opportunities for people to give back to the community through visible community service projects instead of jail and/or high fines and uses resources to assist people in obtaining employment, housing, mental health counseling when needed. My research projects were aimed at helping the organization better understand the needs of Southwest Detroit and to obtain funding to help the organization address those needs. Most notably, my supervisor and I worked closely to complete a grant application regarding an outreach program for victims and survivors of human trafficking who are residing within Detroit. I appreciated getting to work with the Executive Director, Ms. LaNeice Jones, I grew to greatly admire her as a community leader. Her unwavering commitment to her organization and community is evident in the countless hours she puts in to ensure the center operates as an effective community organization. I truly appreciated having the opportunity to work with and learn from Ms. Jones this summer. Thank you.
