Abstract
After two years of high-profile police killings such as Eric Garner (NY, 2014) and Korryn Gaines (MD, 2016), Millions March NYC organized a protest asking for three things: the resignation of the NYPD commissioner and defunding the police to use that money as reparations for survivors of “police terrorism.” Four years later, one day succeeding the death of George Floyd, the demand of defunding the police resurfaced as hundreds of protestors took to social media to express their frustrations. As of July 2020, organized protests, many associated with Black Lives Matter, are demanding local governments to cut the budgets of local police departments and reallocate the money into the predominantly black neighborhoods and communities. Mass media articles picked up the discussion after protesters spray painted the demand on the White House, however coverage died down along with news coverage of the peaceful protests against police brutality. We were able to monitor the progression of this discussion by day-to-day tracking the news articles and Twitter posts, using keywords and hashtags such as “Defund the Police” and “#georgefloyd,” through two databases, Newsbank and Meltwater. Many strides have been taken in response to the daily nationwide protests for defunding the police that continue without news coverage. Our lab undertakes the necessary task to explain the development of news and social media coverage on protestors continued efforts to defund the police.
