Abstract

Learning to read is an important skill necessary in elementary school. It is key for academic success and for life in general. If learning to read in one language is difficult, imagine learning to read in two… In order to answer this question, we looked and analyzed the data of 93 bilingual Spanish-English children within the ages of 5-11 years old that have lived in the U.S. for at least two years. Different tests in both languages were conducted to evaluate their reading levels as other critical components in reading proficiency such as vocabulary and morphology and phonology awareness. These analyses also explored each children’s background and its influence in their reading evolution. In the study we found that bilingualism in children, specifically English-Spanish, helps in the reading process and its comprehension for both languages as it also establishes a stronger connection between the morphology, phonology, and vocabulary of both languages, which is an advantage for kids when they are learning how to read. In other words, bilingualism is an important factor in children’s literacy and plays an advantage in the reading evolution of children in both Spanish and English.
