Abstract

Our research examines the role that reference choices and citation practices play in the outcome of papers – which is to say whether they were rejected or published – in the writing of mathematics education manuscripts. Our computer program generates the citation networks by scraping the references of papers submitted to a select mathematics education journal (Blinded). We utilize statistical models to analyze the data and to document trends that may be predictive of the outcome of the papers. Our research can reveal patterns in why papers get rejected, which can inform authors about what journals are looking for when selecting papers to publish, and inform editors about any biases they could have.
