Abstract
Modern media can be quite polarizing, intentionally causing emotional reactions in consumers. Using a unique data set of news texts scored for emotional content, I examine how people’s opinions change after being exposed to angry or enthusiastic news. I conduct an experiment using a survey where participants rate their own emotions after reading news texts and state their opinions on political figures and groups. I then examine how different emotional treatments cause different linguistic features to occur when respondents describe Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and the police.
