Abstract
This semester, we aimed to independently write short stories and poems, come together to workshop our pieces, read literary journals, and eventually improve on our work enough to have it published. First, we spent a week creating an original work. We then read the work of the other mentees and made comments on what we liked and what we thought could be improved on, discussing these comments in the workshop. Our UROP mentor aided in this, adding his own comments and giving in-depth explanations for what we could do better. Next, we revised and edited our work, and sent it out to literary journals we gathered in our database from our readings. The results of our work are still to be determined, as none of us have been accepted or rejected by any literary magazine or journal. However, we have all greatly developed our skills as writers, and undoubtedly furthered our writing careers. No matter what the outcome is in terms of publishing, this experience has provided us with a multitude of strategies we can use for future projects and endeavors. If we do get published, that indicates the start of a professional writing career, as well as getting our names out into the field while adding to a growing community of emerging writers and new works.
