Abstract

There have been few studies on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in algebra classrooms at community colleges. Much of the existing literature concentrates on students at four-year institutions, leaving the perspective of community college students neglected. In the community college setting, research has been focused on instructors’ views rather than students. However, it is important for us to understand and consider the diverse perspectives of students on this topic because they participated in the teaching process. In this study we recruit students from various community colleges and ask them to share their experiences and perceptions of DEI in their community college math classrooms. We offer students the option to participate via various method: through surveys, written narratives, analysis of videos, and one-on-one interviews. We use a grounded theory approach to identify their definitions of DEI. Our findings will provide a new trajectory for further development of DEI, especially in the College Algebra classroom of Community Colleges. Through learning from the students what constitutes DEI in mathematics classrooms, we hope to improve future research efforts, including the development or modification of existing observation instruments like Evaluating the Quality of Instruction in Post-secondary Mathematics (EQIPM).
