Abstract

Students who have a strong understanding of media literacy are better equipped to evaluate the accuracy and credibility of the stories they read in the media. Encouraging students to think critically and determine whether the presented assertion is reliable or misleading, rather than accepting information from the media without further analysis. THINKING PRO provides students the opportunity to practice media literacy skills virtually with the assistance of a teacher or through a series of video lessons. The students are given an assignment consisting of various articles. Students identify claims, evidence, facts, opinions, and explanations, as well as the who, what, where, when, and why questions. Moreover, my research fills the gap to understand how these reading and writing assignments can be used to help students improve their media literacy. Their ability to do so determines whether any additional practice is needed. They analyze the first half of the article with their teacher and the remainder on their own. THINKING PRO later grades the section that was completed independently to further determine the students’ comprehension of media literacy.
