Abstract
The past year I have worked to aid the literary magazine the Michigan Quarterly Review with their upcoming special issue publication “Soma Flights.†The issue aims to explore, share, and analyze the roots of an experimental genre of literature which blends bodily experience with reading experience. A key part of the project has been reading, discussing, and selecting a wide variety of submissions for the upcoming special edition through the submittable website platform. These submissions included fictional short stories, non-fictional pieces, and poetry. On a more independent level I have been working on an essay publication to be released alongside the special issue. The essay works to analyze and compare poetry of the past to the newer “Somatic†poetry in hopes to better understand the genre and craft a guide for MQR readers. I also have been working on a presentation for MQR, compiling information on design and marketing strategies from previous literature magazine special issues. The goal of this research is to provide helpful insights for future special issue publications and thus aid MQR in continuing to support unique genres of literature in future publications.
