Abstract

Despite the extensive extant research on the medical systems, the literature on design of pre-hospital care emergency response systems (ERS), including efficient placement of ambulances in a sector, is relatively sparse. The objective of this research project is to survey the nature of research on emergency response systems across the globe. The overall perspective of this topic can be depicted in three different manners: legal papers, general research, and mathematical models. The specific focus of my work is to study the literature on mathematical models of ambulance deployment. and categorize the literature, especially for developing countries. This study can inform organizations and emergency response companies to optimize the resources that they possess. ERS problems are caused by inadequate management and a lack of equipment in the emergency response system. In general, we observe two primary ambulance allocation methods that have improved efficiency by considering the demand throughout the cities and factors such as time of the day, traffic, and off-days. The two classes of mathematical models are the double standard and maximum availability models. This project will contribute to approaches to redesign the emergency response systems in developing countries with the objective of maximizing efficiency and minimizing mortality.
