Abstract
Keeping up with the rapidly changing dynamics of electric vehicle development provides vital insights on its potential and helps inform the automotive industry to best harness electric vehicles’ potential. For this study, we tracked the different regulatory changes and charging policies both private and public in both the US and the EU in order to understand the different approaches. The electric vehicle industry is in its early stages, so it is important for regions to learn from each other about the effects of different policies. We used web-based sources from government entities, consulting companies, and news media to gather information from around the world that we synthesized and presented as slide shows on the Automotive Futures Linkedin site. The information will also be used in our upcoming Propulsion Strategies for the 21st Century conference and our EV Evolutions website. Countries like China have demonstrated remarkable success by mass producing cheaper vehicles and efficient batteries, all with a domestically-sourced industry. On the other hand, the United States and European Union are still experimenting to stimulate the development of electric vehicles. The United States is expanding subsidies and exploring how to encourage the widespread adoption of electric vehicles while making them appealing for usage on longer trips, with accessible charging stations. Europe, on the other hand, already has a working incentive structure that has spurred more widespread adoption, and is working to pare down some of the subsidies and instead invest in more efficient batteries and faster charging stations to improve the experience for electric vehicle owners. We think our findings that will be presented across a number of forums will help inform the automotive industry about some of the successful ways countries are approaching the development and introduction of electric vehicles, as well as inform government officials about other potential policies to consider.
