Abstract
Introduction: Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer generally treated with combination chemotherapy. Many treatment combinations include weekly injections which require frequent travel to and from specialized treatment centers. For Veterans receiving their cancer care through the Veterans Affairs (VA) system in Michigan, these injections can only be administered at the Detroit or Ann Arbor VA locations. In other countries, such as France, home-based treatment programs for multiple myeloma have been implemented without compromising patient safety, while potentially improving overall costs and patient satisfaction. Objectives: 1) To review the currently published literature describing home-based bortezomib administration. 2) To assess whether home-based treatment with bortezomib through the VA is feasible for Veterans with multiple myeloma living in Michigan.
