Abstract

As emerging technologies are increasingly used by children, the effect of technology on the day-to-day practices of children and families is relatively unanswered. Consequently, studying how technology influences children’s health and well-being will help find ways to optimize their experience and the benefits of these technologies. In our research, we explore the health-related routines of families via surveys and interviews with 33 children (ages 7-12) and their parents/grandparents. The goal of our study is to understand their perspectives on technology as a part of their health-related routines and how technology may influence their health and well-being. Both qualitative and quantitative data have been collected. In particular, we analyzed quantitative data using IBM SPSS Statistics. The data sets were cleaned and interpreted after conducting literature reviews. Correlation tests between various variables of interest have also been conducted. We believe the results produced will have important value when understanding the effect of family routines on the automation of children’s health-related behaviors. By answering how technology impacts youngsters’ health and well-being, the results will shed light on how technological design could better meet the needs of children and families. With a new understanding of how technology could impact children’s well-being, technology designers and developers could consider that when creating new health applications, devices, or systems.
