Abstract

California recently adopted legislation mandating women on boards of directors of California companies. A question arises whether the newly appointed women on boards of California companies come to the board with the traditional experience of board members, or whether they bring different backgrounds to the table. This project includes a literature review of the typical qualifications and experiences of board members as well as an empirical analysis of whether women on California boards are qualified in the same way. Being able to find answers to the big research question will contribute to a more equitable future for women in business in the United States and across the world.
