Abstract

The study of medicine, as it pertains to undergraduate and graduate-level coursework, requires an understanding of fundamental concepts of human anatomy. As such, learning all of the muscles, bones, and neurovasculature and their relationships remains the crux of student learning. Previous studies have pointed to using active recall methods, such as practice questions, and electronic resources as strategies secondary to anatomical donor dissection in their ability to promote the understanding of structure and function. This study aims to further examine the helpfulness of a particular electronic resource—colorful visual aids—for students enrolled in a practical-based anatomy course, ANATOMY 503, at the University of Michigan. Survey data was collected from students enrolled in ANATOMY 503 using mid-semester and end-of-semester questionnaires, which used multiple-choice and free-response questions. Students displayed overwhelming support for colorized visual aids for both their formal laboratory dissections and preparation for practical exams. Prospective lab manuals will aim to cater to this positive student feedback by employing colored structure images more frequently. Additionally, future studies will aim to assess the incorporation of clinical, functional, and variation slides to maximize student engagement and enhance learning of human anatomy.
