Abstract
Education within the healthcare system is constantly evolving and the methods used to teach clinical skills have expanded over time. The purpose of this study, conducted by Dr. Monisha Sachdev, is to explore the different forms of education on rounds and autonomy experienced by residents and students. Furthermore, qualitative data will be collected on their experiences of senior resident-led rounding as well as the patient/family experience within these conditions. To achieve this, the project plans for a mixed method approach consisting of a focus group of senior residents alone, interns alone, and medical students alone to discuss education and autonomy with senior resident-led rounding. The groups will meet for a 30 minute period towards the end of each inpatient rotation. Resident assistants who are present during rounds Monday – Friday will collect start and stop time of rounds and record who was present on rounds to allow quantification of length of rounds when led by a senior resident. A survey will also be given out to parents/caregivers after rounds have been completed asking them to rate the quality of rounds on a scale of 1 to 5. We hypothesize that a balance of senior resident led rounds and attending led rounds is an ideal method for the educational benefit of students on an inpatient team, while also not making a significant difference in communication or patient care.
