Abstract
To prevent viral infections in the public, having a method to accurately predict virus removal in water is critical. In this study, a literature review of articles on chlorine dioxide, chloramines, and peracetic acid was conducted. The project aims to synthesize data on these three disinfectants into one usable model that can predict how efficiently the three disinfectants will inactivate viruses. The project will evaluate whether the current regulatory standard for virus disinfection adequately removes all viruses in the dataset. The product will compile published data into one model which will be able to predict rates of disinfection for the three disinfectants of various viruses in different conditions. The review was done through three stages. The first stage aimed to find articles on the disinfectants using keywords. Criteria were created, based on factors that affect data results and disinfectant performance. Criteria included having kinetic data on virus disinfectants and reporting experimental conditions. In our current stage, collected articles are reviewed based on the criteria and either included or excluded from the study. In stage three, data from the articles will be extracted and analyzed to build a model where trends on virus disinfection are analyzed to then determine whether policies put into place about the given disinfectants achieve disinfectant levels. The model will consolidate years of data. We will draw conclusions on the behavior of viruses when disinfected in different conditions, including a range of pH and temperature. Results will help evaluate the regulations that the Environmental Protection Agency has put on these three disinfectants for wastewater disinfection.
