Abstract
This project is focused on women involved with the founding, installing, and performing of carillons (mainly in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand) and the composition of carillon music. Often in the music world, white men overshadow women and minorities. The goal of this project is to shine a spotlight on these lesser-known (yet still very important) women. Since a large part of the research has been completed, the current stage focuses on permanently embedding these discoveries into public online resources. Although part of this raw data was analyzed and cited in articles on the project website CarillonWomen.org, much of it remains as unused archival material and has yet to be cataloged. We are continuing to create articles on the women we’ve discovered and promoting our findings for others to learn about them, even non-musicians or others who are just interested in music history and culture. Working towards that goal, we have created an interactive multimedia timeline that people can freely explore and learn about the diversity of women leaders who were significant in the carillon field after 1950. Women were influential throughout history, yet overlooked by colleagues as well as historians, and their contributions should be acknowledged.
