Abstract

Blind and low vision individuals often use visual assistive technology (VATs) to better understand and navigate their visual surroundings. These VATs, which commonly employ AI technology or remote human assistants, process and interpret visual content captured by blind users. At times, this visual content contains sensitive information, such as financial or medical data, which has heightened privacy concerns among users. Currently, VATs lack the necessary features and policies to fully and properly protect user privacy. In this study, we aim to design a survey for blind VAT users to capture their preferences and requirements for privacy on these platforms. In particular, our survey will capture blind users’ preferences regarding what data is collected and how that data is processed. Our findings will reveal common privacy and data processing expectations among visually impaired VAT users. With these findings, we aim to further clarify and highlight the specific privacy needs of the visually impaired demographic. Our findings will assist in the development of more privacy aware and user friendly VATs.
