Abstract
Visual assistive technologies or VAT are applications blind people use to gain visual information. However, with the use of VAT, is the risk of private visual content being shared. Previous studies have examined the privacy concerns of blind people when using VAT, focusing on attitudes towards accidental and known data disclosures, as well as the perceptions of specific types of private content being disclosed. Work towards improving privacy control for blind people proposes numerous solutions including, obfuscation, clarification in data policy, increased data control, and general redesign for privacy rights. This study aims to conduct a survey on blind people, expanding on previous studies with questions centered on the disclosure of private content in different scenarios. These scenarios consist of three sections: 1) the type of private content that is being shared; 2) the reason user data is processed; and 3) the types of tools available to protect user privacy. By proposing different scenarios, different variables impacting a user’s comfortability interacting with VATs can be better analyzed. Additionally, this survey would explicitly ask users for the rating of privacy tools in regards to autonomy benefits. This study is part of research aimed at the development of solutions to provide users with a greater sense of security and self agency in their day-to-day interactions with VAT.
