Abstract
In historically marginalized and economically disadvantaged Detroit neighborhoods, residents experience systemic barriers to financial resources, business support, and entrepreneurial opportunities compared to wealthier communities. Many entrepreneurs, particularly those from Black and Brown communities, struggle with limited networking opportunities, restrictive lending practices, and reduced market visibility. These challenges contribute to economic disparities that hinder business growth and community development. ProsperUs Detroit, a nonprofit organization, works to address these barriers by providing business training, financial coaching, professional services, and microloans through a relationship-based lending model. To evaluate the effectiveness of these programs, we conducted a comprehensive survey of local entrepreneurs who have participated in ProsperUs initiatives. This study collects both qualitative and quantitative data, examining key variables such as business growth, financial stability, access to professional services, and mental well-being. Using a combination of GIS mapping and interactive data visualization, we analyze demographic trends, business performance indicators, and resource accessibility within the targeted communities. By assessing participants’ experiences and measuring the long-term impacts of these support services, we aim to identify strengths and areas for improvement in economic development efforts. The results of this research will be shared through reports, digital platforms, and community forums to inform future policy recommendations and enhance support systems for underrepresented entrepreneurs. This project contributes to a broader movement advocating for equitable economic opportunities, emphasizing the importance of community-driven solutions in fostering sustainable development. By amplifying the voices of small business owners and promoting financial inclusion, this work aims to help create a more just and prosperous economic landscape for marginalized communities.
