Abstract
The project “Restorative Justice Toolbox†is a community engaged research project that is in partnership with an inner-city nonprofit named Brilliant Detroit. Brilliant Detroit has 23 locations that act as community centers that provide a wide variety of resources. These resources include in-person programming along with general services related to tutoring, health, and family support. Conflict resolution within the program was not significantly developed, and this was brought to Brilliant Detroit’s attention in recent months. This led to a research project on restorative justice (RJ) to be conducted, with an end goal of creating a “toolbox†or guide for handling conflicts using RJ practices. Some of the previous literature that guided the initial phases of research included: “The Little Book of Restorative Justice†by Howard Zehr, and “Peacemaking Circles: From Crime to Community,†by Kay Pranis. These pieces of literature, along with many Native-based articles were used to build a foundation of understanding for the project. This project can be related to other conflict resolution projects within organizations like the University of Michigan, which utilize RJ practices in their own renditions of RJ circles.
