Abstract
Women who experience adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) face a higher risk of cardiovascular disease later in life. This has raised significant concern about the long-term health implications of such conditions beyond the immediate pregnancy period. The LEA Lab at the University of Michigan is currently leading a cohort study titled “Hemodynamics after adverse pregnancy outcomes†(HAAPO). HAAPO focuses on measuring arterial stiffness and wave reflection in women with versus without an APO 8-16 years after pregnancy, along with evaluating how associations of antiangiogenic or inflammatory biomarker levels measured at the beginning of pregnancy affect arterial stiffness and wave reflection. This study is being conducted at five medical campuses nationwide (Utah, Northwestern, Columbia, Indiana, and Pittsburgh), and the data is sent to the University of Michigan for evaluation. 1,430 women who are 8-16 years postpartum who are participating in the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-be Heart Health Study 2 (nuMoM2b-HHS2) will serve as the HAAPO sample. Obtaining new information through measurements about the potential effects of APOs on hemodynamics, along with longitudinal data on lifestyle habits, could uncover new ways to reverse the risk of cardiovascular disease in women. While this study is still in progress, the LEA lab hopes to complete data collection in the next 1-2 years.
