Abstract
A comprehensive narrative review that included peer-reviewed, popular media, and grey literature was conducted to examine disparities in diagnosing neurodiverse conditions among people of color, focusing on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Significant disparities exist by race, resulting in Black and Hispanic children experiencing delayed and/or inaccurate diagnoses. These disparities are driven by racial bias, socioeconomic barriers, and structural inequalities. This study summarizes how provider biases, dismissed parental concerns, and limited healthcare access contribute to these disparities. Ensuring equitable neurodevelopment assessments and interventions that are inclusive and universally available will require increased awareness of disparities in access, the implementation of culturally competent care, and the development of adequate healthcare policies.
