In this series, students from my Global Media undergraduate seminar use the podcast format to explore Netflix original programming within various international markets. Through their analysis of how programs are situated within particular regional contexts, students begin to identify the potential industrial, generic, and audience logics informing Netflix’s production (and/or co-production) of these programs, as well as their labeling as Netflix original series. We ultimately explore how producers and audiences alike engage with global media to negotiate issues of cultural identity in everyday life, while analyzing how the complex interactions among global, national, and local forces inform international media production in the digital age.
