Course Structure

Math 216 is a four credit, semester long course introducing differential equations to students who have had a course in single variable integral calculus. It has a lecture, traditionally of about 100 students, that meets three times a week (MWF) for an academic hour (50 minutes); and a computer lab or recitation, of 25–30 students, that meets once a week (on Tuesday or Thursday) for an additional hour (50 minutes). Historically (since the 1990s) there have been five to eight computer labs worked in Matlab, in some cases with recitations as well, and in some cases the course may be taught with recitations only.

The course is coordinated by a course coordinator, who manages the course syllabus, assignments, and assessment structure. The lectures are taught by faculty, and the labs by graduate students.

Course Assessment

Course Assessment has historically included some combination of the following:

One or two Midterm exams, and a Final
Web homework, and possible Written homework
Lab writeups (if there is a computer lab component to the course)
and Quizzes

The exact set of assessments, and the weights as a part of the course grade, are determined semester-by-semester by the course coordinator. In particular, please note that the implementation of quizzes and whether labs or written homework are included as part of the assessment will depend on the structure of the course in a given semester.
