Abstract

Background: Many studies have been conducted studying the effects of COVID-19 on the mental and physical health of healthcare workers. However, less is known about the effects of the pandemic on vulnerable populations of workers in low-wage occupations in the service industry. Objectives: This study aims to explore if fear and stress related to the pandemic has worsened mental health or increased substance misuse among hotel workers in Michigan and if certain groups based on job title, gender, and racial/ethnic background are more likely to experience these poor outcomes. Methods: 200 survey responses will be collected using the online platform Qualtrics. Paper copies of the survey will be made available to those lacking access to a computer. . The 30-minute survey will collect data on hotel employees’ demographics, COVID-19 related stress, physical health, mental health, substance use, and job responsibilities. Upon preliminary analysis, 30 workers (stratified by those experiencing poor and positive health outcomes) will be invited for a phone interview. Results: SPSS software will be used to analyze the survey data, and narrative analysis will be used to analyze qualitative interview data. The quantitative data from the survey will be integrated with the qualitative data from the interviews, and we will explore the connections between the two data sets to identify patterns. Conclusions: By gaining a deeper understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on mental health and substance use among hotel workers, we hope to identify areas in which intervention could improve the health and well-being of the workforce, and influence policy in a way that addresses the current needs of hotel employees.
