Abstract

This Community-Engaged Research project was focused in the Nardin Park community, at Hope Academy Detroit (12121 Broadstreet Ave, Detroit, MI 48204). In Hope Academy, Authority Health, a semi-governmental organization, recently established a health center that hopes to serve as a health and resource center for the Nardin Park community. Hope Family Health Center’s Community Advisory Council requires that input from youth is incorporated in decision-making. Through an evaluation of assets and a survey of community members, it was found that creating a Health Club for the students at Hope Academy would be an effective way to create a link between the youth being served and the Community Advisory Council. Additionally, by surveying teachers and gathering information by several other means, students at Hope Academy were found to have a disjointed health education which is mirrored in low rates of health literacy around the City of Detroit. Through this project, we hope to create a sustainable “Hope Health Club,” which can supplement the health education of students at Hope Academy and create a space for young people in decision-making within the Health Center. In its first year, this project brought 10 students together to discuss health topics that are of most importance to students at Hope Academy.
