Abstract

As the global leader in New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), the Chinese government has developed policies over the past 10 years to support this new industry. My project focus is on how what policies the government has developed, how those policies are implemented, what policy changes have taken place over time, and finally, how successful have the policies been in driving adoption of NEVs in China. My research over the past year found that the government has been successful in supporting the adoption of NEVs through a number of policies like subsidies to manufacturers and consumers, vehicle registrations that allow vehicles to drive in major cities at any time, making all central government and provincial government vehicles transition to NEVs, and developing fuel economy regulations that force manufacturers to develop NEVs as well as gas vehicles.
