Abstract

Communication between physicians and nurses is an essential part of patient care, yet communication between the two is often poor. These ineffective communication techniques commonly lead to negative consequences for hospitalized patients. For communication to be effective, physicians and nurses need to achieve shared understanding. This study examines factors that contribute to shared understanding via Verbal Response Modes (VRM). VRM classifies speech into codes that describe the speaker’s relationships to whomever they are speaking. This study analyzes videos of conversations between physicians and nurses within a hospital setting, assigning VRM codes to each section of speech. This method allows identification of specific areas where communication is unsuccessful, which makes implementing solutions easier and more productive. The overall goal of this study is to improve and find new methods by which to facilitate communication between physicians and nurses. Not only will this benefit physicians and nurses by making their interactions more productive, it will benefit patients by ensuring they have an effective medical team.
