Abstract

Hello, my name is Diana my pronouns are she/her/hers. I’m a rising senior majoring in Secondary English Education I worked with Brilliant Detroit, a non-profit neighborhood-based organization, centered on kindergarten readiness and literacy. Brilliant Detroit focuses on the student’s entire well-being in order to help them succeed, and provides services from food distributions, wellness classes, and tutoring programs. I helped to run and manage their Book Nook virtual tutoring program. I connected the students Brilliant Detroit serves with tutors who would guide them through different reading standards. I also learned to navigate Zoom in all its intricacies and technical difficulties. I got to interact with students and gradually watch them get more and more enthusiastic with reading which is always exciting. This definitely wasn’t the internship I was anticipating going into the summer but I appreciate and value the experience I got from it and the students I was able to work with. I especially really value the work I got to do with my 3 mentors Grace, Aryeh, and Krystal who helped to run this program and serve so many students. As a future educator, I look forward to taking these experiences and connections into those I will make as a teacher with my students.
