Abstract

Hello, I’m Grace Tate. I’m a rising Junior, double majoring in Health and Human Services with a concentration in Public Health and Business. I had the pleasure of working with Chandler Park Conservancy (CPC), whose mission is to provide recreation and environmental stewardship opportunities to Detroit. CPC’s major focus is providing amenities typically scarce in urban communities such as a brand new skatepark and community gardens. It offers environmental camps where youth can learn concepts such as storm water management, how to complete soil testing and overall conservation. Among my tasks, I helped design surveys to access the community’s perspective about the park and youths’ knowledge about environmental stewardship. I also helped orchestrate youth summer and environmental camps. I learned about nonprofits in Detroit and how much of a collaborative team effort is needed on aspects such as funding, planning, and regulations while also tackling other issues that benefit the community as a whole. Also, this experience taught me about environmental conservation – something that I had not imagined would be beneficial for me on my public health journey. This was a meaningful experience and I’m 100% grateful for my internship with virtual distance and to be able to help out and form a relationship with my supervisors.
