Abstract

Hello! My name is Sean, my pronouns are he/him/his, and I’m a junior majoring in history and sociology. I had the opportunity to work with Nortown Community Development Corporation where I helped with property parcel research. I laid groundwork for the organization to create community development strategies by compiling owner and tax information from hundreds of different properties in Northeast Detroit. I also helped the organization create a plan for Community Benefits Agreements to ensure new businesses moving into the area contribute to the community that they profit off of. Working with the Executive Director was a great learning experience. Pat Bosch is a tireless advocate for the organization and her perseverance and dedication inspired me. If you’re ever supposed to attend a meeting with her don’t be surprised if she’s a little late, but know that it’s because she is doing a dozen other things to help her community. As I move on from DCERP and from Nortown, I’m hopeful for the future. I know that more interns and volunteers will continue to do the important work that I helped with for just a summer. I will forever remember and be grateful for my experiences in this program. They have shown me how to always maintain a community-based perspective as I pursue my goals. Thank you.
