Abstract
Learning the anatomical makeup and details of the human heart can prove to be difficult when using exclusively 2D diagrams. The same goes for studying all human anatomical structures or systems. Using 3D models can help students better understand and put together all previously known knowledge for a complete understanding of anatomical structures and specimens. BlueLink is a free anatomy database tool offered through Michigan Medicine’s Division of Anatomical Sciences and founded by Dr. B. Kathleen Alsup and Dr. Glenn M. Fox. At BlueLink, we utilize photogrammetry, photo editing, and model-tuning technology to produce high-resolution 3D anatomical models. Our models are from scans of plastinated human specimens which provides learners with a hyperrealistic learning experience. In the production stage, every 3D model starts with a 360 degrees scanning process in which we photograph all angles of a chosen specimen. The images are then uploaded onto a 3D model generator, fine-tuned with an editor software, and finally uploaded onto BlueLink’s SketchFab page. While BlueLink’s detailed models are made with medical and anatomy students in mind, these free anatomical learning tools are for one and all to utilize. The goal of BlueLink is to spread knowledge of anatomy to the curious.
