Abstract
Nationwide, there is a lack of assistance, inclusivity, and even basic respect towards the elderly. While America’s median age is increasing, its awareness surrounding the needs of its fastest growing population has lagged far behind. However, some local groups are changing this narrative. Dream of Detroit, a small nonprofit organization serving the predominantly Black and low income community off of the Davison Freeway, has long supported their older adult population. They have everything from frequent, well-attended block parties to free home repairs with modifications for accessibility, and are currently creating a Wellness Workshop Series to better engage with seniors in the community. In order to gain a better understanding of the needs of this demographic, we researched common issues affecting older adults in the modern era and how other cities and countries adapted to an aging population. We also collected data through a survey on specific interests prevalent in the community to create a truly personalized experience. This information was used to create a unique, highly specific curriculum mapping out each of the nine workshops, which all include an expert speaker from a Detroit organization. Beginning in late spring or early summer, older adult members of this community will have the opportunity to foster an already present interest, create connections with local seniors and Detroit organizations, and learn valuable skills for their everyday lives. With this series, DREAM aims to show that supporting senior citizens is not only the ethical choice, but a deeply necessary one.
