Abstract
In 1985 the Detroit Free Press, in association with The Ford Motor Company and the superintendent of Detroit Public Schools, started the “Free Press High School Journalism Program.” The program was intended to support literacy and high school journalists by printing articles from Detroit area high school journalists in the city paper. Today this program is no longer printed by the Detroit Free Press; having been taken over by MSU’s School of Journalism, it is now printed for participating schools and hosted online under the title of The Detroit Dialogue. In previous research led by Drs. Simona Goldin and Michaela Krug-O’Neill, articles of the Detroit Dialogue from 2014 to 2025 were cataloged and analysed. However, high school journalism articles published through this program prior to 2014 were unaccounted for. My research task was to locate any of these printed pages dating back to the start of the program in 1985. Once found, these articles were catalogued and arranged for future analysis. Through collecting, analyzing, and comparing these articles, we aim to explore youths’ perspectives on education and learning over time.
