Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into healthcare, yet many communities lack accessible and contextualized education to understand its benefits and implications for patient care. Prior community-based participatory research (CBPR) conducted through the TIERRA program indicated that community partners and health workers in Michigan expressed strong interest in learning how AI is used and healthcare and how to discuss it with patients. Building on these findings, this project aims to co-develop educational materials that strengthen AI literacy among providers, community health workers, and community members. Using a community-based approach, we partnered with Corewell Health and the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) to gather feedback and develop printed and web-based educational materials about AI in healthcare. Methods included qualitative analysis of community feedback, design of brochures using digital design platforms, and preparation for an educational workshop with ACCESS in April 2026. Materials address foundational AI concepts, responsible use guidelines, real-world healthcare examples, and frequently asked questions. Pre- and post-workshop surveys evaluated participants’ AI literacy, confidence discussing AI in healthcare, and perceived usefulness of the materials. For each key question, responses before and after the workshop were compared to assess change. Results indicated increased understanding and knowledge of AI in healthcare among participants. These findings suggest community-engaged education can support more informed and ethical integration of AI across healthcare systems in Michigan today broadly.
