Abstract
A bilobed flap is a surgical procedure that can be performed to repair and reconstruct deformities resulting from removal of cancerous cells, or other deformities on the nose. Given that any deformities on the face can affect a patient’s quality of life, a procedure that can successfully repair and hide any abnormality without significant adverse effects would improve many patients’ well being. The objective of this research project is to evaluate the functional and aesthetic outcomes after a bilobed flap surgery in patients with nasal deformities. An observational and retrospective medical chart review was conducted to identify patients who had a bilobed nasal reconstruction surgery performed at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Patients were included in the study if they met the inclusion criteria. The data was extracted from the MiChart system of electronic medical records. Data was collected on demographic variables such as age, sex, smoking history, use of anticoagulation, surgical details, and comorbid conditions. The outcome variables were nasal obstruction for functional outcomes, as well as pincushioning and scarring for aesthetic outcomes. Also, complications were defined as the need for scar revision or additional procedures, and rates of infection. The data was collected and recorded in Excel spreadsheets. Descriptive statistics will be used to report the results.
