Abstract
Since 2019, suicide rates have increased steadily in youths aged 15-24 (CDC, 2021). Recent studies have revealed that patients released from emergency departments (ED) are at the highest risk for suicide attempts and suicide deaths in the weeks and months following hospital discharge (Goldman et al., 2019 Olfson et al., 2021). Despite this, limited strategies exist to support adolescents and their families in the aftermath of a suicide emergency. Technological solutions, such as text-based caring contacts directed to parents have shown promise in reducing the number of post-discharge suicide attempts (Czyz et al, 2025); these brief interventions offer standardized, feasible, and scalable post-discharge strategies for EDs. In this study funded by the Transforming Youth Suicide Prevention in Michigan Program (TYSP-Mi-4), ED-based and behavioral health clinicians participated in focus groups designed to support the translation of the Text-Based Support for Parents of Suicidal Adolescents (TESP; Czyz et al, 2025) intervention from a research to a clinical setting. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected to assess perceived value and acceptability of TESP, potential barriers, and facilitators needed for successful implementation in My Michigan emergency departments. MyMichigan clinicians reported strong feasibility and acceptability for daily informational and parent-support text messages to occur for 21 days post ED visit. This study is a first step to translating TESP into real world settings in Michigan with the goal of expanding Michigan’s clinical safety net for high risk youth and their families.
