Abstract
Childhood maltreatment is a serious public health issue that affects about 37% of children. The effects of childhood maltreatment, such as educational disabilities or disorders with executive functioning, are known, but the mechanisms behind them are not well researched. One of Dr. Perkin’s main goals is to discern childhood maltreatment from other traumas so that it can be better targeted for academic intervention. The first phase of her research consisted of analyzing the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, while the current phase, which we are in, will begin to quantify childhood maltreatment. We will collect data on participants through multiple examinations and questionnaires to get background information. Then, the study will proceed with neuroimaging and behavioral testing. As of right now, we are formulating the psychological examination and survey questionnaires. This involves reviewing large files of variables, rephrasing them as questions, and formatting them for Qualtrics. Making these tests and obtaining background information is crucial for the study and quantification of CM, as they will be used in the statistical analysis of all collected data. The statistical design Dr. Perkins laid out for this study uses a multivariate regression predictive model in which much of the background information collected will be labeled as covariates.
