Abstract
The KPMP focuses on improving the body of research surrounding Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). To make analysis of such large amounts of data practical, the KTAO has been developed to ontologically store kidney terms, a format that makes future querying more efficient and succinct. This study focuses on collecting data on AKI and Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD) biomarkers for integration into KTAO and analysis of these biomarker groups to look for intergroup trends with implicated biological processes. Using existing KPMP literature and additional literature, protein and gene markers indicating the presence of AKI or DKD were collected. Information on the species from which the specimen was collected, specimen type, and mechanism of indication were stored with each biomarker. Biomarkers for AKI/DKD were further analyzed through Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment to identify biological processes implicated with each disease state. Ontological storage and analysis of AKI/DKD biomarkers creates a useful tool for future avenues of inquiry into the detection and treatment of kidney disease, as well as providing several immediate paths for future research. Initial analysis in this study identifies several biological processes and cell types for both AKI and DKD that may warrant further investigation as key parts of the AKI/DKD pathophysiology.
