Abstract
Chronic kidney disease is an increasingly prevalent condition associated with worsening kidney function and accompanying systemic dysregulation of multiple organs. In genome-wide association studies the gene Atraid, has been associated with development of this disease. Atraid is an apoptosis related protein. We aim to investigate whether Atraid modulates the progression of chronic kidney disease. To do so, we will employ qPCR, western blotting and immunofluorescence in the kidney and other affected organs including the heart and the bone. In addition, we will profile markers in the blood of both kidney function and endocrine control of mineral ion homeostasis. Using Atraid knockout mice, we preliminarily found that the knockout mice have improved markers of mineral ion homeostasis. This experiment has been done before in this lab successfully but now we are repeating with more mice to make sure that it was the knockout gene that caused the results and not just chance. Altogether, our results should determine whether Atraid impacts the progression of chronic kidney disease.
