Abstract

A research study was undertaken to investigate the community economic development opportunities on the Eastside of Detroit, specifically focusing on neighborhoods within the zip codes covered by Eastside Community Network (ECN): 48213, 48214, and 48215. The research aims to gain a better understanding of residents’ perception of an ideal and healthy neighborhood, considering economic factors such as housing opportunities, transportation, safety, education, and health services. Through a comprehensive approach that integrates qualitative and quantitative research methods, a focus group meeting was conducted with four active members of the community to identify key themes. These themes were further explored through an in-depth survey questionnaire to better understand the most pressing issues in the neighborhood. Findings from the focus group and survey revealed residents’ preferences for an ideal neighborhood, including the presence of a complete supermarket, safety, economic opportunities, proper waste disposal, mental health spaces, local or Black-owned businesses, improved transportation, and educational opportunities. Additionally, economic factors, a sense of belonging, love for the neighborhood, and financial constraints emerged as motivations for residents to remain in the area. This research project serves as a lasting reference, guiding efforts to create vibrant and sustainable communities within Eastside Community Network’s jurisdiction. It provides not only immediate conclusions but also offers direction and current indicators for Eastside Community Network and the region, aiding in informed decision-making for ongoing community development.
