Abstract
Home advantage in collegiate and professional sports has been widely studied. Factors that influence home advantage include fans, officials, travel, and familiarity with the home context. Women’s collegiate volleyball has seen a recent increase in popularity, attendance, and media attention. Additionally, the 2023 season saw college volleyball games played in football stadiums and the top three all-time game attendance records. Interestingly, the NCAA DI post-season is played at the higher-seed (better-ranked) team’s home facility until the final four, which is then played at a neutral site. Therefore, the current study seeks to understand the prevalence of home advantage in NCAA DI women’s volleyball within the Power Four conferences using both retrospective home win-loss records during the regular season, conference tournaments, and post-season. Given that most elite and historically successful programs are concentrated within these conferences, the analysis centers on home-game performance in the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Big 12.
