Abstract

Radical cystectomy, or removal of the urinary bladder, is a surgical procedure for patients diagnosed with most commonly bladder cancer, but also congenital anomalies and inflammatory diseases of the bladder. The current documented 90-day readmission rate is approximately 25 %, significantly higher than the average major procedure. The Clinical and Engineering Approaches to Readmission (CLEAR) Care Companion is a mobile application that was developed with the goal of reducing readmission by allowing patients to actively engage in their recovery. The use of a mobile application such as the CLEAR Care Companion gives patients an opportunity to record postoperative symptoms, medication intake, and nutrition, allowing medical providers to more closely monitor changes in patient health and catch possible complications earlier. We hypothesized that patients who have access to these features will have lower readmission rates and less severity of the readmissions that do occur. The CLEAR Care Companion also provides postoperative patient care information, so that patients and caregivers are better educated on cystectomy recovery.
