Abstract
Introduction: Infants are exposed to screens at increasingly early ages. However, little is known about infant screen media use early on, at the infant age of 3 months. Given the novelty of mobile devices, a gap in the knowledge is understanding infant predictors of infant screen media use. Prior work has found that screen media use is associated with greater challenges with child negative affect and child regulatory difficulties. However, recent work has also found that child regulatory difficulties are associated with greater screen media exposures. We hypothesize greater infant negative affect, less infant effortful control is associated with greater infant screen media use. Methods: We aim to conduct a secondary analysis using an ongoing longitudinal study of 230 maternal-infant dyads (n=204 dyads currently enrolled), with data collected at 3, 6, and 12 months of age. Demographic information is collected via survey. Infant negative affect is measured using the IBQ-VSF negative affect subscale (12 items, Likert Scale 0-7, 7=high frequency), infant effortful control using the IBQ-VSF effortful control subscale (13 items Likert Scale 0-7, 7=high frequency). Infant screen media use is measured using a parent-report question about screen media time during weekdays and weekends for TV, tablet, and mobile devices, which is summed and averaged for a total infant screen media use variable. We will run bivariable associations and create multivariable models with infant negative affect and infant effortful control as predictors of infant screen media use, controlling for covariates of maternal race/ethnicity, income-to-needs ratio, marital status, maternal education using SAS 9.4. Results: On average, infants’ effortful control was 5.6 (SD=0.7), infants’ negative affect was 3.3 (SD=0.8). On average, infants engaged in TV viewing for 16 minutes/day (SD=37.4), tablet use for 0.3 minutes/day (SD=2.0), and mobile devices for 1.6 minutes/day (SD=16.8). Expected results: We hypothesize greater infant negative affect, less infant effortful control is associated with greater infant screen media use. We are currently running bivariable analyses and multivariable analyses in the upcoming 2-3 weeks.
