Abstract
Recently, the Chinese automotive industry has greatly evolved regarding global presence and electric vehicles, but there is a lack of quantitative data that shows the evolution of the industry and individual companies. The Chinese automotive industry is composed of domestic manufacturers, foreign manufacturers, and joint ventures. Over the last 20 years, the local governments have supported the development of their domestic industry, consequently decreasing the market share of foreign manufacturers and joint venture groups. Thanks to that support, China has emerged as a global leader in the electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid industries. This research project examined the rise of the automotive industry and analyzed how the expansion of major Chinese companies has contributed to this growth. This study used quantitative data from various sources to analyze and interpret the growth of foreign, domestic, and joint venture companies and the evolution of exports. This project also researched the market shares of electric, plug-in hybrids, and gas vehicles. An analysis of the data shows that: 1) production and sales have been on the rise for the past 20 years; 2) exports have surged; 3) electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are taking over gas vehicles; 4) domestic Chinese companies are dominating the electric vehicle market and the Chinese automotive industry. The results from the data deepen our understanding of the growth of the industry and the future implications of China’s dominance in the electric vehicle market. This project will contribute to future research to show the continuous evolution of the automotive industry in China.
