Abstract
The University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology houses thousands of Filipino cultural objects collected by Carl E. Guthe during the 1922-1925 Philippine Expedition; however, Guthe himself never published the material from the expedition, and it is known primarily to Filipino Archaeologists through several doctoral dissertations. None of the material is currently on exhibit, nor is it available online. The project aims to provide an accessible way for communities in the Philippines as part of the ReConnect, ReCollect project at the University of Michigan, and to map and understand Guthe’s journey through the southern islands of the Philippines using a geographic information system (GIS) and UMMAA’s databases. This project will also contribute to the museum’s efforts to give back to the communities from which the objects were originally taken by making the cultural objects easier to locate and by mapping Guthe’s journey through the Philippines to show which communities were impacted. By completing the GIS and refining the database, almost all cultural objects will be correctly located and accessible to their home communities. This project will provide researchers and community members with a way to digitally view and navigate the vast collection of objects and archival data. but will also be part of the UMMAA’s ongoing effort to repatriate knowledge to the impacted communities from the Philippines.
