Abstract

Paper wasps are incredibly intelligent creatures. They forage for miles away from their nest, live in complex social groups, and adapt to many environmental challenges. To better understand how wasps can do all of these amazing things, we need to study their cognition. Cognition—the processes by which animals acquire, process, and store information—includes behaviors such as learning, memory, and problem solving. These processes guide behavior and are of major interest to biologists. Despite the importance of cognition, relatively few laboratory methods exist for measuring cognitive abilities in paper wasps. We need effective tools to study cognitive abilities in controlled environments because it allows us to make comparisons between individuals and across species. A common way to test cognitive abilities in animals is to use choice mazes. Specifically, T-mazes have been successfully used to test learning and memory in paper wasps. However, the T-mazes that are currently used require substantial handling of wasps by the experimenter, which can introduce variability between trials. My project aimed to develop a novel automated T-maze for behavioral testing of paper wasps. Our design adapted established experimental methods while addressing limitations in existing apparatuses by improving structural quality and ease of use. The maze was constructed using LEGO components, allowing for rapid prototyping, modular design, and cost-effective fabrication. Automation was incorporated through an electromechanical door system consisting of motors and spring mechanisms that can be remotely controlled by the experimenter. My primary contribution was to refine the design and performance of these doors to ensure smooth and reliable operation across trials. The resulting apparatus provides a standardized and user-friendly tool that reduces experimenter interference and improves experimental consistency, expanding the capabilities for studying cognition in paper wasps.
